NWSL opening day rosters announced

Jeff Kassouf April 8, 2013 19

National Women’s Soccer League teams officially unveiled their opening day rosters on Monday. Below is a look at each team’s roster. Keep in mind that some some top players (especially in the Pacific Northwest) are unlisted or will start the year as inactive for a variety of reasons. The maximum active roster size is 20 players. Some teams only listed 18.

Boy, Portland looks awfully good on paper….

    • Steglitz49

I am partial to Chicago and KC, not necessarily in that order.

    • http://twitter.com/anaseryo ▲n▲ ☺☆ ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

      Aufully bad on the field.

      • newsouth

LOL. Will be hard to beat home, but can be worked over on the road. That’s why they are stacked at the top.

I’m not going to lie and say that I will not root for the Washington Spirit (my home town team) but hopefully they can put the preseason aside and move on and be better than we think they are…because we can not have another losing team in the DC area!….So let’s go Spirit!
I agree with everyone that Portland and Kansas look good on paper but …I have a feeling that the WNY Flash is going to be the big surprise….their attack looks impressive already even if it was only pre-season….those Forwards and attacking Middies can score in bunches ….I’m excited to see how it goes vs. SkyBlue on Saturday for them….plus I wonder with SkyBlue’s defense how the Flash Forwards will fair this weekend…..
The other team I’m excited for is the Boston Breakers but it may be a case of just looking good on paper…I was really excited for the FA they signed but they didn’t really light it up during preseason like the Flash and Kansas City….so we will see what happens….I was hoping to have had access to streamed preseason games so that I would have a better idea…it’s so hard to piece things together after they’ve been tweeted or written about….
I’m so hoping the regular season games will be streamed!!
    Desperate for Streaming!!

    • randomhookup

To be fair, the Breakers only played one announced preseason match — against SkyBlue. They were very evenly matched and the Breakers got many more opportunities on goal, but didn’t finish well enough. And they have since added Simon who led WPSL-Elite in goals last year.

The Breakers looked like a team that really wants to push the tempo. Once they have their timing down, look out.

  • Anton

    Boston: Okay, headshots.. fancy.
    Chicago: Kinda old, but whatever.
Kansas City: Only two w/o twitter? Cut em.
Portland: Yawn. Morgan/Sinclair is soooo 2011.
    Seattle: ***
    Sky Blue: O’Hara D/M/F/HC/?
Washington: C’mon step yo game up.
WNY: Still got one #ChasingMia and another going crazy because she can’t do pushups…

    • http://twitter.com/anaseryo ▲n▲ ☺☆ ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

You want to cut cuellar cause she doesnt have twitteR? she scored 5 goals on their last game.

  • wosofan

The Spirit look so very shaky, on the field and off the field (management). For example, today their owner makes a plea to fans to support the team, yet that plea precedes any announcement as to who has actually made the Spirit roster. Who will fans see play for them this season?

Yes, I will concede that it is hard getting a new team up and running, especially under such time constraints. Yes, the owner must be applauded for his commitment. Yes, many people (including volunteers and low-paid staff) are working hard for the Spirit, and mistakes can and will be made, on several fronts. Yes, the players and coaches have been working as best they can.

But also, fans of any professional team have a right to demand better. And the Spirit should be and need to be better than what I’ve seen from them in the past month. I’ve read numerous and repeated apologies and excuses on behalf of the Spirit (or for the Spirit) from journalists, coaches, players, bloggers, etc., but I’ve formed my own impressions, and I find the Spirit quite lacking thus far. Yes, I am thankful for a new league and for the Spirit even existing, but I also want better than what I’ve seen recently.

In any event, nobody can dispute that the Spirit have the best playing surface and venue of any of the NWSL teams. Lovely pitch and a great environment to watch a match. (And yes, natural grass playing surfaces are better than fake turf, for FANS and players alike).

  • heremerawr

I will definitely be rooting for KCFC as I believe they are the team to better represent the midwest. Plus I have a natural aversion to all things Chicago/Illinois lol.

  • http://twitter.com/hercircumstance hercircumstance

Seattle is my team and I guess it is good I know a lot of the players from previous years because they won’t be getting any early NT media boost. I’m also hoping Chicago does well because the midwest needs to be strong unlike in past iterations for everyone’s good. And I’ll be cheering for anyone at all to beat Portlandia every time. That propped up team needs to go down.

  • mms

KCFC looks impossible to beat. Look at that roster: most of the players are over 200 feet tall & a 315 foot goalie. Good luck getting anything in that net!

  • soccerlove101

Thorns midfield and forwards are rock solid. Defense need to be intact for them to really succeed. I can’t also wait to see how Edwards will fair against the midfield of FCKC.

  • Steglitz49

I know that this is the opening day rosters but I cannot help reflecting on the absence of foreign players, apart from Grings and Fuss coming to Chicago next month. Each NWSL team can roster two international players. Where are they? There are no rumors even.

    • randomhookup

There are something like 11 internationals (excluding CAN & MEX allocated players). Considering this thing has just gotten started, you really can’t expect a huge influx in the 1st year of a league that is watching its expenses.

      • Steglitz49

Excellent. I must have missed 9 players then. Dumb me. Do you know who they are?

    • http://twitter.com/hercircumstance hercircumstance

Who are the internationals? Seattle has Fishlock who is a NTer for Wales. Is that what you mean? It is weird to not have a lot on every team and from predictable places, but they are scattered out there. I believe Australia has a few. Foord, Kerr and DeVanna for example. Adriana…from Spain.
