That happened: Bill Cosby drops USWNT knowledge

The Equalizer Staff July 3, 2014 31

Yes, Bill Cosby did that on Twitter. The legendary actor reminded U.S. Soccer, as it hypes up its men’s team that just lost in the Round of 16 of the World Cup, that the women’s national team has two World Cup titles to its name, in addition to four Olympic gold medals.

Rock on, Bill. Rock on.

  • Jon Forsythe

Anyone else annoyed by the “1 Team, 1 Nation” thing that was going around. Shouldn’t it have been, “2 Teams, 1 Nation?” I guess both the men’s and women’s teams are under one roof but as far as attention goes, most of it seems directed at the MNT rather than equally to both.

    • Steglitz49

18,000 on average go to an MLS match and pay decently for the pleasure while 3,000 (4,000 if you include the outlier of Portland) on average go to a NWSL match and pay a bit less.

Swedish TV is using Lotta Schelin as an expert in the studio for the knock-out stages of the WC. During Euro-12, they used Lotta (paired with Anders Frisk) and Caroline Seger paired with Henke. Who are the expert commentators for US TV? I forget? Remind me, please. Is it Mia Hamm?

      • romel dias

        Don e van mention him!

        • Steglitz49

I am surprised that did they not hire Auntie Kate aka Rudi Voeller, the last German coach to take his team to the WC final, on the way knocking out USA in a poorly refereed match incidentally. Rudi and Juergen were team-mates on the NT so Rudi’s views might have been extra special. But it was a long time ago …

Maybe Portland could hire Auntie Kate? There is food for thought.

      • Jon Forsythe

You seem to be trolling on a web site dedicated to women’s soccer. Perhaps you are lost?

Julie Foudy is the go-to expert, FYI. Also, the topic is comparing the national teams, not comparing the MLS (a league that’s been around almost 2 decades) with the NWSL (a league on its 2nd year of existence.

Further down in this comment section you dismiss the 1999 team winning their 2nd World Cup and laud the men in 2002 for making the quarterfinals? Are you not aware the women have never finished worse than 3rd in the WWC? That’s 2011, 2007, 2003, 1999, 1995, and 1991. Oh and 4 gold medals & 1 silver medal in the Olympics since 1996.

Go away, Steglitz49, you’re embarrassing yourself.

        • Steglitz49

NYRick, NewSouth, Reality, Elaine, Romel Dias, Kernel Thai, dw and many others can confirm, that calling me a troll is to devalue the term “troll” and demean any selfrespecting trolls. Beware brining down vengeance from the trolls, lest the trolls of the world unite.

We have loyally supported our local ladies team for the past 5 years and even gone to some of their away matches. We have bought lottery tickets and helped them in other ways. It is hard for women the world over to play soccer, except in the NCAA and on the USWNT.

Nevertheless, it is an inconvenient reality that during this millennium not only has the USWNT come up short but also two American women’s leagues have failed. Everyone around the world who loves ladies football prays for the NWSL to succeed because the world needs more from the US than the NCAA.

Let’s pray that there are not too many injuries during WC-15, that the matches are played in a comradely and mutually trustful spirit, and that the refereeing is up to scratch. In short, when matches in the NWSL are refereed by men, we know that everything is not healthy with US women’s pro-soccer, the magic of bodypaint not withstanding.

    you tell ‘em bill

  • nwslfan

how many people got annoyed with repeated “DeMarcus Beasley is the first American to play in 4 world cups” stat nonsense ?? KRISTINE LILLY IS AN AMERICAN TOO gdi

    • Steglitz49

Women soccer fans, yes. Everyone else in the US, no.

The US ladies last won their WC in the last millennium while in this millennium not only did the men play in the QF in 2002, losing 0-1 to Germany in a match where the ref missed a few things, but the men also did well in the 2009 Confederations cup, losing 2-3 to Brazil in the final having been 2-0 up.

      • luke

Confederations Cup? What on earth is it? :))))
        Never heard of it. :)

        • Steglitz49

Your attempt at wit is commendable.

For the ladies the U20 WC fills the role that the Confederations cup has for the men, so it is not surprising that you have not heard of it.

          • luke

It’s very surprising actually, because I follow every U20W WC very closely for years now.

          • Steglitz49

Well, you just learnt something and I am happy to have taught you. You live and learn. Yeehaw! Seesaw.

          • luke

            Yep, I did, thank you.
Still, it doesn’t change the fact, nobody in Europe (except me now;) knows what it is, cares about it and watches it.

          • Steglitz49

The matches of the Confederations cup of 2009 and 2013 were shown live in (most) European countries. The host of the next WC and the WC holder take part as do the other regions of FIFA, making 8 teams playing in 2 groups.

As I typed in 2009 the US lost 2-3 to Brazil in the final and last year Spain lost 0-3 to Brazil.

    • RollingBeatles

well to be fair when they talk about stats like that, they typically mention men and women separately.

    • FawcettFan14

Not only Kristine Lilly, who actually played in five. Hamm, Fawcett, Foudy, Scurry and Rampone also played in four World Cups. Rampone in contention for a fifth in 2015.

I get why commentators separate men’s and women’s statistics. But a simple change (“First American men’s player to play…”) would be a nice touch.

Incidentally, Formiga and Homare Sawa are still active could well play in their sixth World Cup next year.

    • David

Seconded! Also annoying: people saying Landon Donovan is the US’s highest international goal scorer when Wambach has the highest international goal count EVER (and Hamm, Lilly, Akers, and Milbrett all have 100+ international goals and Parlow and MacMillan still have more than Donovan). He’s EIGHTH in the US. It’d be nice if in at least one interview when someone said that he’d correct them and say highest male scorer or at least say that female players have more goals than him.

  • luke

USMNT is a joke in comparison to UWSNT.
In every possible SPORT aspect of the word: individually (mostly anonymous players for the rest of the world), collectively (they showed no style in the WC) and historically.
Fans who respect football and its history should avoid putting these two teams in one sentence, it’s really outrageous and embarassing.

    • Steglitz49

Americans invented the phrase — “Coming second? That’s what we call losing.”

      • luke

        Applied in London recently.
Did a man invented it? I bet ladies are thankful. ;)

    • Evevic

Why so much negativity? As a fan of both I’m not sure why it has to be USMNT vs USWNT. Those of you who are making a direct comparison of their achievement are being dishonest. You act as if our men’s program started on equal footing with Brazil, Germany, Spain, Italy, Argentina, Belgium etc. I’m frustrated our men’s progress hasn’t been further along but honestly it will take more time for us to compete on the same level as those countries. Our struggle is similar to their struggle in basketball for the same reason. Fortunately because of title IX American female athletes got the type of support in team athletics, including soccer, girls in other countries could only dream of. In essence our women’s program has had a head start over everyone else. The gap between our women’s program and others is closing because they’re finally getting the same support. Let’s face it, here in the US and worldwide the World Cup and the men’s is more popular amongst both men and women. I think the better our men’s team does the more it will help the women’s game grow. It’s not sexist, it’s just a fact. Some of the members of USWNT stated so themselves. Once this exciting World Cup is over, I’ll turn my attention to our ladies next year and cheer them on. I wish US fans would show their loyal support to both programs.

      • Guest

Thats nice and all but if you can’t acknowledge that the USMNT team gets more support just for qualifying for the world cup than than the uswnt does for coming in third, than your an idiot. And the better mens team does will not help the women’s game grow. Support and acknowledgment from the mens game is what will help the women’s game grow.

        • Guest

Kind of what Bill Cos was tweeting about. Support and acknowledgment.

        • Evevic

As I stated, women and men support soccer and all men sports to a higher degree than women’s sports. Unless that changes, the men’s program regardless of achievement will always get more support overall. Some of you are bitter because of that but don’t blame the men’s program. Unless of course you want to be critical of female fans for spending their hard earn money supporting male athletes. Again the men’s game is more popular here and worldwide. The truth is the TV ratings for our US men’s group stage match against Portugal surpassed the 1999 women’s final match. Just a fact. I absolutely feel that increase in popularity will translate into next year.

  • kernel_thai

Maybe Cos would like to own an NWSL team in Philly

    • TsovLoj

      Squoodibblywoobop FC lol

    • Steglitz49

Touché! That would be true support.

    • David

Jell-o doesn’t sponsor a team yet, right? I think we can make this happen!
